Tonight I was thinking that I would love to build a Standard-legal red/green werewolves deck. Who couldn’t love a deck full of aggressive, shape-changing humans? Because red and green are probably my two favored colors, I quickly started throwing werewolves into a deck. After I added more and more and I saw which spells were available to fill-out the deck, I realized that it should not be a standard deck, but would be better suited to ISD Block Constructed.

So I took out the few spells that restricted the deck to Standard and decided to make it legal for ISD block. After completing that, I had the following list:

4 Reckless Waif
4 Gastaf Shepherd
4 Mayor of Avabruck
4 Daybreak Ranger
2 Kruin Outlaw
3 Instigator Gang

4 Geistflame
4 Moonmist
4 Brimstone Volley
3 Garruk Relentless

9 Forest
3 Ghost Quarter
3 Kessig Wolf Run
9 Mountain

Sideboard:
3 Ancient Grudge
3 Full Moon’s Rise
4 Gnaw to the Bone
3 Bramblecrush
2 Witchbane Orb

Now, with this deck in hand, my first thought was to head to the tournament practice room and give it a go. My other thought was to just jump in a 2-man queue (because that’s often the only decent way to test a deck). But, for some reason, before I went to actually play the deck, I decided to review what decks were popular in the format.

What I discovered were decks that were faster than mine (White human decks) and decks that would have a fairly easy time of controlling my wolves (Bloodgift Control). It’s a good thing I did this, because I’m pretty sure that my brew would have been slaughtered at the hands of these superior builds. So without even playing a single game, I came to the conclusion that my lovely brew (awful as it was), was unplayable. This is probably the correct conclusion given that I scanned at least five tournaments worth of finishes and didn’t see a single werewolf deck.

Just a quick comparison of my deck to Bloodgift Control shows that Brimstone Volley kills all of my guys if they’re not transformed, Curse of Death’s Hold is tough to beat through, Devil’s Play is kindof a catchall (even for transformed werewolves), geistflame kills 8 of my creatures easily, and sever the bloodline is bad as well. On the plus side, Full Moon’s Rise out of the board would be highly effective. But that’s it. In truth, my deck would just get spanked repeatedly. So because I took the time to think out card interactions and possible game states, I avoided several hours of failed testing.

I am not abandoning the concept, though. I think that things will get a lot better for R/G Wolves when Dark Ascension comes into play. Fling, Briarpack Alpha, Lambholt Elder, Scorned Villager, Wild Hunger, Wolfbitten Captive, Young Wolf, Huntsmaster of the Fells, and Immerwolf. There are some nice options in there that will hopefully give the cuddly, fuzzy werewolves more of a chance.

For now I’m going to test out the Bloodgift Control deck and see how fun that is. I have a feeling it will be good to drop 5/4 demons and wipe out human hordes. Rawr.

I was wondering to myself if I was even going to be able to jump into the Modern format, with the high cost of entry and all. Then I came across this decklist piloted by Gainsay in a recent online PTQ:

Gainsay (4th Place)
Modern PTQ #3290351 on 01/14/2012

Main Deck

1 Dryad Arbor
4 Forest
1 Godless Shrine
1 Golgari Rot Farm
1 Horizon Canopy
4 Misty Rainforest
2 Overgrown Tomb
2 Razorverge Thicket
2 Swamp
1 Temple Garden
4 Verdant Catacombs
23 lands

4 Birds of Paradise
1 Dark Confidant
1 Eternal Witness
1 Ethersworn Canonist
4 Kitchen Finks
3 Melira, Sylvok Outcast
1 Murderous Redcap
1 Noble Hierarch
1 Ranger of Eos
1 Reveillark
1 Spellskite
1 Sun Titan
3 Viscera Seer
4 Wall of Roots
27 creatures

4 Birthing Pod
3 Chord of Calling
3 Thoughtseize
10 other spells

Sideboard
3 Dismember
1 Kataki, War’s Wage
2 Maelstrom Pulse
2 Nihil Spellbomb
2 Obstinate Baloth
1 Orzhov Pontiff
1 Qasali Pridemage
1 Shriekmaw
1 Thoughtseize
1 Thrun, the Last Troll
15 sideboard cards

I really like utility decks and Birthing Pod strategies are no exception. I really wanted to play a deck with Tarmogoyf in it, but the ~$80 per copy price tag has kept me at bay. The fun thing about this deck is that I already had roughly 60% of the cards! It’s hard to argue for spending an additional $500+ for a “top tier” deck, when this one promises to be lots of fun as well.

Update: I’ve played a few matches with the deck and it sometimes seems hit or miss. The mirror match I played wasn’t too bad, I won because I drew better. There were a few times where it just depended on who got the Melira combo first. I boarded in creature removal to get rid of his Meliras and disrupt his plan in general. I also played against a Gifts deck, which was considerably more difficult due to the stupidity of recurring Elesh Norn against all my 1 and 2 toughness creatures.

I don’t have much more to say about the deck except that I saw a version with Baneslayer Angel in it, which I love, but I think this version is stronger because of more expensive cards like Dark Confidant. The only change I’ve made thus far is to remove the Horizon Canopy for a Gavony Township (because I don’t have a Canopy and don’t really feel like parting with 9 tickets to get one. I’ll post some testing results next time.

It’s been quite a while since I posted last, and for that I apologize. But recently I have decided to start blogging again, if only to keep myself energized about Magic. Last year in February I had a baby boy, who basically turned my world from halfway upside-down to fully upside-down. And on top of that, I’m in graduate school trying to get my MBA. Quite the workload to try and fit Magic in to. And yet, for some strange reason, I am unable to stop playing Magic. I have always been drawn to the game, there’s no mistaking that, but now I can’t see myself pulling away from it for any long period of time.

So this past weekend, Conley Woods won a Grand Prix and in so doing ensured that MTGO would be full of people trying to play his deck. Yay! Now, having no advanced knowledge of the deck or how to play it, I obviously built it immediately (why not, every other deck I’ve played sucks and I have a death wish).

Black-Green Mana Ramp (c0urtesy of Mr. Conley Woods)

1 Dragonskull Summit
7 Forest
1 Ghost Quarter
4 Inkmoth Nexus
2 Kessig Wolf Run
1 Mountain
5 Swamp
4 Woodland Cemetery

25 lands

2 Acidic Slime
1 Birds of Paradise
1 Glissa, the Traitor
4 Grave Titan
4 Primeval Titan
4 Solemn Simulacrum

16 creatures

3 Black Sun’s Zenith
2 Doom Blade
1 Go for the Throat
2 Geth’s Verdict
2 Green Sun’s Zenith
4 Rampant Growth
1 Ratchet Bomb
4 Sphere of the Suns

19 other spells

Sideboard

1 Ancient Grudge
2 Batterskull
1 Black Sun’s Zenith
2 Curse of Death’s Hold
1 Garruk, Primal Hunter
1 Go for the Throat
1 Liliana of the Veil
2 Nihil Spellbomb
1 Ratchet Bomb
1 Thrun, the Last Troll
1 Tree of Redemption
1 Viridian Corrupter

Figuring I would play against some of the mirror, I switched out one Doom Blade in the main for a Go for the Throat. I know it’s a small change, but being able to kill Grave Titans on sight seems pretty important. In a world full of hay-makers, the guy with more hay-makers is the one who wins (generally).

I then proceeded to play four Standard 2-mans. I only had enough tix to enter one 2-man, so I had to chain them in order to get back in the game. I won the first three… against the mirror. And I lost the fourth one against the mirror. That’s right, FOUR mirror matches!! I like the deck, though, and would recommend it if you’re in for fun and some mirror matches… lol.

So Magic 2012 is finally upon is in real life and it’s coming to an MTGO near you next week. Had the MTGO PreRelease been this weekend, I’d have been able to run tournaments all weekend long. Unfortunately next weekend my Sunday is completely booked. I will likely only play in a few drafts instead of multiple Sealed Decks. Ah well, I’ve got to play when I’ve got the time.

So let’s get down to the business at hand. The green cards in M12 look really good. I’m a huge fan of the new Garruk (despite his weighty 2GGG mana cost) and I absolutely love Hunter’s Insight, Overrun, Dungrove Elder, Jade Mage, and Skinshifter, just to name a few. That doesn’t include the old standbys like Primeval Titan, Rampant Growth, etc… All in all, I think this fall is going to be a great time for green mages!

So I’ve done some brewing with these new weapons and after several ridiculously bad ideas, I came up with the following deck.

Not So Stupid Green

20 Forest
4 Tectonic Edge

4 Arbor Elf
4 Llanowar Elves
3 Jade Mage
4 Dungrove Elder
3 Solemn Simulacrum
3 Acidic Slime
4 Primeval Titan

3 Beast Within
3 Hunter’s Insight
3 Garruk, Primal Hunter
2 Overrun

Sideboard:
4 Autumn’s Veil
4 Nature’s Claim
1 Plummet
4 Obstinate Baloth
1 Acidic Slime
1 Beast Within

Okie dokie! Let’s analyze this puppy! Any good green deck worth its salt starts with 8 mana-producing 1-drops. Whether it be Birds or Elves of Llanowar or Dark Shadow or whatever elves (like Arbor), they all work. These are obviously here for acceleration as well as providing bodies for the eventual Overrun. I considered both Rampant Growth and Overgrown Battlement, but neither fulfill the role of an able-bodied attacker.

Next up are the attackers! Jade Mage provides a way to have an early beater while being able to construct an army of 1/1 saprolings in the late game as well. Saprolings like Overrun, or so I’ve heard… Dungrove Elder is one of my favorite cards from the new set. Sure, it requires you to play nearly mono-green, but Hexproof really is an amazing ability and I think if Troll Ascetic were legal, it would definitely warrant 4 slots in any green deck. the other heavy hitter in the deck is Primeval Titan, and boy is he heavy! You couldn’t ask for a better six-drop and he sure plays nice with Dungrove Elder.

After that come the utility and card drawing mechanics. Solemn Simulacrum fetches lands, serves as a chump and an Overrunner, Acidic Slime provides much needed artifact/enchantment/land removal, Beast Within is just all-around good, Hunter’s Insight draws cards nicely, and the new Garruk is a beast all to his own. The Solemns might be incorrect, but that will have to come out in testing. Acidic Slime is a lovely card, I just wish it were a 3/3 instead of a 2/2… or had reach. Ah well. Beast Within doesn’t really need an explanation as it is just all-around awesome.

Two of the new additions from M12 are Hunter’s Insight and Garruk, Primal Hunter. These two cards make up the deck’s card-drawing capability. I believe that a resolved Insight on a 4/4 or 5/5 Dungrove Elder is enough to put away the game. Not to mention what happens if you hit with a Titan. At worst, though, it will draw a removal spell and you’ll get 2-for-1′d. Sometimes you just have to take that chance. Hexproof + Insight is a very good combination, ensuring that they won’t remove your guy in response and drawing cards in the process. Garruk is pretty awesome on his own or in collaboration with an army. The correct play 95% of the time will be to play him and make a beast, then using his draw cards ability on the next turn. Sometimes you will want to draw cards immediately (like if you have another Garruk in hand), or you may want to build him up to his ultimate (perhaps a stalled board position). I think he’s going to add a lot of punch to the deck.

The sideboard is just a bunch of random green cards thrown together, and will only be fleshed out after testing and extensive study of the Standard metagame. For now that’s all I’ve got!
